UPDATE: It appears the tweet in which we saw the video cut off prematurely, leaving only the impression that Strasburg had not shaken the President’s hand. However, this video shows Strasburg clearly still standing on the stage after the moment in the video, leading to the possibility that the MVP did, in fact, shake Trump’s hand and did not “snub” him.

Stephen Strasburg, the Washington Nationals pitcher who was named Most Valuable Player of the 2019 World Series, went to the White House today with the rest of his team to be honored by the President for bringing the very first MLB championship to Washington DC in the team’s history.

And while there were plenty of moments of levity during the not-quite-solemn event, all eyes were on Strasburg as he went up to the podium to stand next to Trump and briefly speak about the thrill of winning the World Series and what it meant to him as the MVP.

Most expected the championship pitcher to sound much like he did in post-game interviews: His incredible 5-0 record with a 1.98 Earned Run Average during the postseason basically speaks for itself, so we end up with a lot of “all credit to the team” and “our manager did a great job” — the typical stuff from someone who’s just been given such a prestigious honor. In fact, the MVP award came with a 2020 Corvette Stingray, so in his head, I’ll bet he’s already on the open road.

But you know damn well what you’re doing when you’re standing next to Donald Trump, and Strasburg absolutely delivered the high heat when Donnie went in for a handshake and got treated to an eyeful of Strasburg’s left shoulder as he turned all the way past him — not around the other direction, but toward him like he was going to accept, and then he kept turning.

It’s unbelievable, and it is a thing of beauty. The internet loved it so much that one Twitter user even added a little baseball commentary to the video of the epic burn:

As baseball legend Yogi Berra once said, “You’ve got be very careful if you don’t know where you’re going, because you might not get there.”

Today Trump didn’t quite get there.
