Acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney just confirmed what all of us knew already about the so-called fiscally conservative Republican party. Donald Trump campaigned on being a man for the forgotten Americans, but once he got into office, he and his Republican colleagues gifted the wealthiest with a tax break that caused the deficit to skyrocket to over 1 trillion dollars by 2020. That staggering amount of money was not used for an affordable health care system, or for our country’s infrastructure, but to benefit the wealthy.
In audio of an overseas speech obtained by the Washington Post, Mulvaney admitted that his party doesn’t give a fuck about deficits. He went as far as to acknowledge that Republicans only cared about the deficit when former President Barack Obama was in office.
“My party is very interested in deficits when there is a Democrat in the White House,” the acting chief of staff said. “The worst thing in the whole world is deficits when Barack Obama was the President.”
“Then Donald Trump became president, and we’re a lot less interested as a party,” he continued.
Mulvaney continued to say that the growing deficit — which is soaring in the Trump era — was “extraordinarily disturbing” but that neither party nor voters cared much about it, according to the Post. He said that Republicans were “evolving” since Trump became president.
Then he went on to say that we can’t afford to fight against the climate crisis.
“We take the position in my party that asking people to change their lifestyle dramatically, including by paying more taxes, is simply not something we are interested in doing,” Mulvaney told the attendees.
Trump’s fiscal irresponsibility will prove disastrous and something that will take decades to address. We’re supposed to believe this is a booming economy while taxpayers will be burdened with our country’s exploding deficit and Donald Trump drops hints of cutting direly needed programs such as Social Security. The Trump administration’s neglect of our nation’s financial health should alarm everyone because it won’t be the president’s rich pals who will help fix the problem. It will be us — the actual forgotten people.
