Early Monday morning, Donald Trump retweeted an altered photo of Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in outfits that Trump supporters would say make them look like “terrorists.”
We get that Democrats and Republicans are going to have differences on foreign policy, but the childishness of this president is irresponsible and out of hand at this point.
It is one thing for a president and a member of Congress to publicly disagree on a topic, and another thing entirely to tweet out pictures of them that are clearly photoshopped to make them look like they’re doing, saying, or supporting something that in reality they are not.
In addition to the hashtag “#NancyPelosiFakeNews” — as though any phrase in the last decade is more tired than “fake news” — the tweet is captioned by the original poster, @D0wn_Under, with “The corrupted Dems trying their best to come to the Ayatollah’s rescue.”
Now, it doesn’t take a rocket surgeon to figure out why Trump retweeted it: It attacks some of his favorite targets. But this kind of dangerous rhetoric divides the country more than anything, since the threat of war is the most potent possible unifier America has known for years. If his followers are driven by his lies to believe that their fellow citizens are on the “other side” when it comes to war against another country, their hatred could and likely will boil over into rage.
This, of course, isn’t even the first doctored photo tweeted by a Republican about Iran and a Democrat this year, and we’re not even halfway into January. Just a week ago, Arizona Republican Rep. Paul Gosar tweeted a fake image of Barack Obama and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, who never actually met each other.
But the rhetoric on Iran is secondary to the reason that Trump and the GOP spread garbage like this: Why do Schumer and Pelosi appear in clothing associated with another people, another culture, another part of the world?
Racism. It is the primary tool of the political right, and unfortunately, it still works on his idiot followers.
