Source Inside Hearing Claims GOP Lawmaker Made Fake Phone Call To Avoid Answering Questions About Trump’s Attacks On Witness

Okay, this is just pathetic.

Politico reporters Sarah Ferris, Melanie Zanona, and John Bresnahan have been following today’s impeachment inquiry hearing featuring the testimony of Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch all day — as have I, in fact — but unlike me, they’ve been in attendance. That means they see every squint, smirk, yawn, eyeroll, seat shift, and furrowed brow that only someone there in person can see.

If I was there myself, I might be paying special attention to the Republicans on the Intelligence Committee and their reactions to the epic failure of their plan to derail these hearings.

It was pretty simple, really: They intended to interrupt as much as possible, point to Democrats not allowing them to interrupt as evidence of one-sided hearings, and ask completely unrelated questions about Joe Biden and his son. In fact, Republican Counsel Steve Castor was so laser-focused on his own assignment — to somehow try and get Yovanovitch to admit that Trump was justified in committing the crimes he committed — that he ended up making the former Ukraine envoy look like an absolute genius as she swatted away his non-sequiturs and speculation.

But as it turns out, it’s not the stuff that the GOP lawmakers did while they were seated at the hearing that made them look the most like assholes (except Elise Stefanik; she totally looked like a smirking asshole the entire time in the hearing).

Instead, it’s what the Politico reporters caught some of them doing during a break in the hearing, after Trump had issued multiple tweets about the witness that was currently on the stand. Not without good reason, those Republicans did NOT want to talk about the President’s apparent attempt at witness tampering, something his pal Roger Stone just got convicted of this afternoon.

From their recap of today’s proceedings:

Several Republicans on the Intelligence Committee dodged the topic entirely. Rep. Mike Turner (R-Ohio) refused to answer questions about the tweets as he ducked on to the House floor, while Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-Texas) quickly whipped out his cell phone and began talking into it, even though his home screen was visible and there was no call in progress.”

Now, I know Republicans like to play pretend…

But this is not a photo opportunity. This is an impeachment hearing regarding the President of the United States and whether or not he committed crimes against the nation. Let’s go ahead and knock off the games, Republicans.
