The House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties will be holding a hearing tomorrow “to examine, through open and constructive discourse, the legacy of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, its continuing impact on the community and the path to restorative justice.” Reparations and the discussion surrounding the idea are something that has been a bit of a hot topic in the 2020 election cycle.
But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has quickly made it strikingly clear that he’s a racist douchebag by proclaiming that he does not support reparations for descendants of slaves because “we elected an African-American president.”
You can go ahead and start fuming with anger now. But it gets worse.
McConnell was questioned about reparations during a weekly press conference at the Capitol.
“I don’t think reparations for something that happened 150 years ago for whom none of us currently living are responsible is a good idea,” the Kentucky Republican who has described himself as the “grim reaper” declared. “We tried to deal with our original sin of slavery by fighting a civil war, by passing landmark civil rights legislation. We elected an African-American president.”
“I think we’re always a work in progress in this country but no one currently alive was responsible for that,” McConnell continued. “And I don’t think we should be trying to figure out how to compensate for it”
The Senate Majority Leader went on to argue that “it would be pretty hard to figure out who to compensate.”
“We’ve had waves of immigrants as well who have come to the country and experienced dramatic discrimination of one kind or another,” he commented. “So, no, I don’t think reparations are a good idea.”
Wonder if he’s referring to the throngs of immigrants who have been subjected to a living hell under the reign of Donald Trump and his administration?
