There seems to be some confusion among Americans about what it means to live in an area with a mask mandate — that is to say, somewhere that the governor or mayor has instituted an ordinance requiring at least partial or sometimes full-time face-coverings when out in public.
Here in Washington State where I live, Governor Inslee has, after having merely instituted a mask mandate that was largely toothless, enacted one that actually requires businesses to turn away customers who refuse to wear a mask. Twenty other states have similar ordinances, and countless urban areas inside states that otherwise won’t enact a mask mandate (because they’re governed by Republicans) have such laws coming from their mayors.
Atlanta is one of those cities, and you’ll never guess where President Trump visited today to deliver a speech about infrastructure (and complain about Joe Biden).
The Mayor of Atlanta, Keisha Lance Bottoms, appeared remotely on MSNBC this afternoon, and weighed in on what she saw in footage of Trump arriving at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport along with his entourage: The President without a mask, and everyone accompanying him wearing one.
🔥“Well @realDonaldTrump is actually violating the law as he stands on our tarmac without a mask…I’m very glad to see that others are heading the law…it’s not surprising that Donald Trump is once again breaking it.” #Atlanta Mayor @KeishaBottoms@Acynpic.twitter.com/gG8zUSqDSA

She makes an important point about the unsurprising nature of Trump simply ignoring the mandate — the fact is, the vast majority of those you see without masks believe that the rules do not apply to them. Trump clearly knows the importance of a mask, or he wouldn’t require everyone with him to wear one, and he wouldn’t regularly test staffers and reporters that follow him around. But even if the nonsense that right-wingers have been spreading around about it being “unconstitutional” to require masks were true — and it’s not, or you would see a lot of women’s breasts everywhere you go, being as requiring them to cover those would be unconstitutional as well — Trump has none of the mythical “health exemptions” that would qualify him to go without.
In fact, I’d love to see someone enforce a mask mandate on the president and then see the dilemma on his face of whether he should lie and say he has asthma, or whether that would make him look too weak.
