Trump certainly hasn’t kept his disdain for the late Senator John McCain a secret. More than once, McCain’s family has been catapulted into the spotlight after they were forced to defend their departed loved one from Trump’s brutal attacks even in his death.
Late yesterday, the Wall Street Journal reported that Trump’s White House went to some pretty extreme lengths to hide the warship USS John McCain during Donald’s recent 4-day visit to Japan. According to the WSJ report, under strict order from a U.S. Indo-Pacific Command official that read “USS John McCain needs to be out of sight,” Navy and Air Force officials hung a tarp over the ship’s name, removed any coverings that bore its name, and moved a barge closer to the ship to obscure the name even further.
But according to a new report from the New York Times, coming on the heels of the WSJ article, that’s not all they did to hide even a mere mention of the late senator’s name. The Times reports that in addition to the lengths gone to hide the ship, Navy personnel assigned to the USS John McCain, who typically wear caps featuring its name, were all sent home for the day — the officials were not invited to the Trump rally and what few of the ship’s sailors that did arrive wearing its patch were blocked from entering.
The Times report read:
Two Navy sailors, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly, said that the McCain sailors were not invited to hear Mr. Trump speak that day aboard the amphibious assault ship Wasp, while sailors from other American warships at the base were. One Navy sailor said that McCain sailors wearing their ship’s patches were even turned away from the president’s address.”
While the Journal‘s article did report on the sailors from the McCain being given the day off, the new information from the Times expands on just how deeply this snub ran — and highlights the president’s pettiness to an extreme we’ve never seen before.
Of course, as expected, Trump has taken to Twitter to deny any knowledge of the situation. But we all know this stunt has his name written all over it.
