Baltimore Mayor Asks Trump To Cancel Visit Because It Sends The “Wrong Message” And City Cannot “Afford To Shoulder” The Costs

He's not wanted there.

Donald Trump has repeatedly slammed Baltimore, calling it the “most unsafe city in the country” and that it would be like “living in hell” to reside there. I don’t recall a president ever mocking entire states and cities before, but then Trump came into power, and everything changed, including decency, morals, and intelligence. Trump has been touring plants at several cities and using those visits as rallies to boost his reelection chances — and we, as taxpayers, are footing the bill. And now, Trump wants to visit the very city he compared to “hell.”

Baltimore Mayor Bernard C. “Jack” Young (D) is calling on the president to cancel an upcoming visit to the city amid the coronavirus pandemic, saying that he is concerned the trip will send the “wrong message” to residents currently under a stay-at-home order, according to The Hill.

Trump is scheduled to visit the Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine on Memorial Day and participate in a ceremony honoring the U.S. Armed Forces. Mayor Young, though, announced Wednesday that all public events in Baltimore are canceled through Aug. 31, and that includes the Fourth of July fireworks. Also, like most cities amid the national crisis, Baltimore is distressed financially.

“That President Trump is deciding to pursue non-essential travel sends the wrong message to our residents, many of whom have been disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 virus,” Young said in a statement on Twitter. “I wish that the president, as our nation’s leader, would set a positive example and not travel during this holiday weekend.”

The Mayor also said that the president’s visit would send a “conflicting message” to residents, and would also require a financial obligation that the city is not in a position to deal with. Young explained that the city is losing on average, $20 million per month and that it can’t “afford to shoulder” costs associated with personnel and equipment for Trump’s trip.

The president isn’t setting a good example amid the COVID-19 outbreak that’s taken nearly one hundred thousand American lives. I’m not sure how many Benghazis we’re up to right now, but it’s way more than twenty thousand. People are dying, and Trump is seeking photo-ops.
